Local groups are teaming up with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office to provide new and refurbished bikes, as well as bike helmets, to kids.
The annual “Sheriff’s Re-CYCLE for Kids” bike drive is happening this Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations of bikes and helmets will be accepted at Royal Oak Ford’s new car parking lot, 27550 Woodward Ave., and at the Oakland University campus, lot P3 at the corner of Walton Boulevard and Squirrel Road in Auburn Hills.
Along with this Saturday’s collection event, bikes can be dropped off throughout the year at any of the sheriff’s 12 substations in Oakland County or at 1-800-SelfStorage.com locations in Troy, Oak Park and Rochester during regular business hours.
Thousands of bikes have been collected, refurbished and donated to those in need since the sheriff’s office created the Sheriff’s Re-CYCLE for Kids program in 2006.
Besides 1-800-Self Storage.com, those participating in the bike drive include the Royal Oak Police Department, Sheriff PAL-Oakland County, Byers Wrecker, Adler’s Towing, Oakland University, United Wholesale Mortgage and Dan Gutfreund Realty Group, who is donating one bike for each house sold in 2022.
Since the Sheriff’s Re-CYCLE for Kids program was created by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in 2006, thousands of bikes have been collected, refurbished, and donated to people in need. The Sheriff PAL Program team will help to distribute the bikes and helmets once the collected bikes are refurbished and repaired.
