Donate used bikes for children in need

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Re-CYCLE for Kids program, Birmingham Police Department, the Sheriff PAL Program (Police Athletic League) Oakland County, Oakland University, 1-800-Storage.com and Dan Gutfreund Realty Group, a member of Signature Sotheby’s International Realty, are teaming up on Saturday, May 8, to collect new and used bicycles and helmets for Oakland County children and adults in need.

Donations of bicycles and helmets will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the junction of Woodward and S. Old Woodward avenues in downtown Birmingham, across from the Sherwin Williams Paint store; and on Oakland University’s campus, on Lot P3 at the corner of Walton Boulevard and Squirrel Road in Auburn Hills.

Since the Re-CYCLE for Kids program was created by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office in 2006, thousands of bikes have been collected, refurbished, and donated to people in need. The Sheriff PAL Program team will help to distribute the bikes and helmets once the collected bikes are refurbished and repaired. Studies show there are ample benefits specifically for children who ride bikes, including physical fitness, improved mental health and it can improve focus. As a result of the pandemic, bicycles and supplies have been backordered, and harder for families to obtain.

To encourage donations, Dan Gutfreund Realty Group will match the first 50 bikes donated on May 8 with new bikes for children in need.
